I'm Akovi Gunn. I was born and raised in the heart of Togo, West Africa.
Concerned about the wellbeing of the entire community, I was driven more by the greater good than being an entrepreneur, hoping that we, as a community would rise together.
The journey in search of myself took me from my native Togo to France, and later to the U.S.A where I spent five years in San Francisco. I moved to Geneva (Switzerland ) where I lived from 1999 to 2005. I then left for Montreal (Canada) where I have been living since.
Along the way, I have met some very good souls, made a few good friends, been confronted to the realities of life. My drive to work towards the greater good grew even stronger as I moved around and was confronted with social injustices.
Realizing the differences between the South and the North, the “have” and the “have-not”, the ones that do all the work and the ones that make all the money, it became evident to me that in order to survive as a people, we would have to work in support of each other.
I have tried many things and have failed many times. I have persevered and learned along the way never to sacrifice your ideals for life achievements.
I created the Makeda Shea Butter business, knowing very well that it would not get me to where society thinks I should be at this time in my life, but would provide me with the satisfaction of trying to help, of bringing a good product to the market and making sure that the people who make the product get their fair share of the selling price.
I hope this journey will continue for many more years to come and that you and I will cross paths more than once.
My hope is for you to enjoy your experience using our great Makeda Shea Butter and knowing full well that the money you are paying will go a long way.
